THREE LOCAL STUDENTS ADVANCE IN LIONS INTERNATIONAL PEACE POSTER CONTEST
Jenni Schanen, grade 7 at Random Lake Middle School, Dakota Wade, grade 6 at St. John Lutheran School, and Lydia Laumann, grade 6 at Our Lady of the Lakes School, have taken their first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning local competition at their own schools. The contest is sponsored by the Random Lake Lions Club.
These competitors’ posters are among more than 375,000 entries that will be submitted worldwide in the 22nd annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.
After their posters were constructed, each had this to say about peace: thirteen-year-old Jenni Schanen (W4119 Belgium Kohler Road, Fredonia) said: “World chaos is solved by peace”; Dakota Wade (W6582 Hwy 144, Random Lake), age 12, said “God is peace in my heart”; and eleven-year-old Lydia Laumann (N1808 Knorr Road, Random Lake) from Our Lady of the Lakes said: “Helping hands brings us peace around the world”
Posters were selected by members of the faculty and staff from each school for their originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “The Power of Peace.” Locally, the contest ended on October 21st.
Random Lake Lions Club President Tom Silver said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at all three of the schools. “it is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”
Jenni’s, Dakota’s, and Lydia’s posters will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international rounds of competition if either is to be declared the international grand prize winner,” President Silver said.
One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $2,500, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to New York City, New York, for the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and cash award of $500.
“Our club is cheering for all three of our local winners as their posters advance in the competition, and we hope that their vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” Silver said.
Each of our local winners will receive $25.00 from the Random Lake Lions Club and another $25.00 check will be given to either student if their poster continues on to the Lions Multiple District level.
