Devon Kaat, grade 6 at St. John Lutheran School, Madilyn Straub, grade 6 at Our Lady of the Lakes School, and Gina Sanfelippo, grade 7 at Random Lake Middle School, were the local winners in this year’s Peace Poster Contest sponsored by the Random Lake Lions Club. The contest enables participants to become an internationally recognized artist by first winning local competition at their own schools.

These competitors’ posters were among more than 375,000 entries that were submitted worldwide in the 24th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

After their posters were constructed, each student presented a quote about peace: “My main wish is that peace would grow in the heart of all people.” the 12- year- old Devon Kaat said. Devon’s instructor is Ms. Amy Anderson.

Twelve year-old Madilyn Straub stated: “Peace flies with children.” Madilyn’s instructor is Ms. Heather Keller.

“Peace around the world.” the 13-year-old Gina Sanfelippo from Random Lake Middle School said. Gina’s instructor is Mr. Brian Sommersberger.

Posters were selected by members of the faculty and staff from each school for their originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Children Know Peace.” Locally, the contest ended on October 26th.

Random Lake Lions Club President Jim Benson said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at all three of the schools. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.” Devon’s, Mailyn’s, and Gina’s posters advanced to face stiff competition at the district where Madilyn Straub received second place.

At the international level one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $2,500, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to New York City, New York, for the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and cash award of $500.

“Our club cheered for all three of our local winners as their posters advanced in the competition, and we hoped that their vision would ultimately be shared with others around the world,” Lions President Benson said.

Each of our local winners received $25.00 from the Random Lake Lions Club and an additional $25.00 check was given to Madilyn Straub for her second place at the Lions Multiple District level.
